7 Great Ways to Show Solidarity With Ukraine

Ukrainian flag

We must show our support for the democratic people of Ukraine, because we at RegisterRenters believe voting matters.  So it matters when authoritarians attempt to overthrow democracies.  In Ukraine, it has been Putin.  In the US on January 6, 2021, it was Trump.

If there are to be ethics on the internet, all of us using this medium must support democratic governments.  Even our tiny site devoted to registering renters.

After the Spanish civil war started in 1936, 2,400 brave Americans joined the resistance.  They fought a military coup backed by fascists and Hitler’s arms.

We Home in Ukrainecan’t advocate armed support.  But we are encouraging donations to seven organizations providing humanitarian aid to show our solidarity with Ukraine.  NPR just published a very good list prepared by Jeff Dean and Jonathan Franklin at NPR Ukraine.

We encourage you to visit the above link to NPR and read Dean and Franklin’s descriptions of the following groups:

  1. UNICEF at https://www.unicef.org/ukraine/en.
  2. Doctors Without Borders at https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/what-we-do/countries/ukraine. Personally, this has been one of our favorite charities.
  3. Voices of Children, based in Ukraine at https://voices.org.ua/en/.
  4. International Committee of the Red Cross at icrc.org/ukraine.
  5. Save the Children at https://www.savethechildren.org/us/where-we-work/ukraine.
  6. UNHCR at https://www.unhcr.org/ua/en, and
  7. Sunflower of Peace is the most interesting group in the NPR list for us.  They are funding field medical backpack kits for front line use.  Check them out and contribute on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/sunflowerofpeace/   Watch this interesting video by the young founder of Sunflower of Peace:

Many online sites have other suggestions to show solidarity with Ukraine.  Do your research.  Then, feel free to use the comment section below to give us your ideas.  We will read them all and publish those that are the most helpful and well researched.

OTHER WAYS TO DEMONSTRATE

In addition, you might find ways to join a demonstration through your local Democratic Party or through one of the hundreds of Indivisible groups around the country.  If you do, take a photo to share with us.

And, by the way, the Sunflower is Ukraine’s national flower.  Their flag is blue, for the peaceful sky, and gold for the richness of the sunflower’s color.  So you can take their flag to stand for “peace over all”.  We are happy to use this opportunity to express our solidarity with Ukraine and our hope for peace.  One way to show solidarity for Ukraine would be to print out their flag and put it in your window.  Click here for a version of their flag you can use for printing.
